Some runways are located in an area with lots of empty space, where the pilots have clear view of the runway and can easily (as far as easy goes when landing) land the plane on the ground.. However not all runways are like that, some countries have runways in between mountains, or even on top of mountains.. Or they don’t have the space so they make man made islands. Talking about islands, they usually don’t have enough space, which makes it difficult to build normal runways and what you get is some crazy located and short runways..
